Katy Perry - Teenage Dream Album Review

Teenage Dream is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Katy Perry. It was released on August 24, 2010 in the United States.

Teenage Dream will be a smashing success, and for as long as Katy wants to make music (and money) she’ll have no problem finding an audience.

Leah Greenblatt wrote for Entertainment Weekly, “Beneath the fruity outfits and fart jokes, Perry is clearly serious about the business of hit song-craft; that doesn’t make Dream nearly cohesive as an album, but it does provide, intermittently, exactly the kind of high-fructose rush she’s aiming for”.

With her sophomore album, “Teenage Dream,” Perry makes a bid to reclaim the pop crown by selling us sex, teenage optimism and broken hearts in 12 tracks — and it’s nearly flawless. Permeated by a genuine earnestness, “Teenage Dream” is the sort of album that every pop star who’s in it for the kids yearns to make. Unlike other tartlets of the moment, with their weighty themes of taboo sexual identity (Lady Gaga) or idiotic musings on anonymous sex (Ke$ha), Perry delivers track after track delving into the simple, real rushes and crashes of young love.

The album’s artwork was created by NYC-based artist Will Cotton, who is known for his art direction in her sweet ‘California Gurls’ music video.

California Gurls” featuring rapper Snoop Dogg is the lead single from the album. The song spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold over three million digital copies to date.

The album’s second single is its title track, which was released to radio stations on July 22, 2010. Jocelyn Vena of MTV said it “picks up right where ‘California Gurls’ leaves off. With a strong beat to back her up, Perry sings about a boy who makes her feel like a teenager again” after hearing it at a listening event in New York City. The following day the single was released via iTunes and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number twenty and has since reached number 7.

Firework” will be the third single from the album and is due for release in October 2010. The music video is set to include competition winners from eastern Europe.

Prior to the release of the album, three promotional singles were released exclusively on Apple’s iTunes Store as a countdown to Teenage Dream. “Not Like the Movies” was released on August 3, 2010 and made a debut of 53 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Circle the Drain” was released on August 10, 2010 as the second promotional single. The third and final promotional single, “E.T.”, was released on August 17.

Overall, “Teenage Dream” is a solid way to end a long, hot summer: a mostly successful collection of tracks that indulge in glittery wistfulness. It’s young, but it’s fun — and that’s the shtick Perry’s best at.
